Richard Schmidt, 87, peacefully passed away on December 14, 2020. He was the Beloved Husband of Rose his loving wife of 62 years; Daughters; Sandra (Larry) Ball, Joni McLellan and Denise (Tom) McCurry. Son; Richard (Jennifer) Schmidt. Grandchildren; Derrick (Tara) Ball, Jason Ball, Bryan (Katrina) Ball, Tom (Sherie) McCurry, Jennifer McLellan, Ashley (Collin) Moerman, Courtney McLellan, Caitlin McLellan, Tyler Schmidt and John Schmidt. Great-Grandchildren; Elysea, Christian, Grace, Grayson, Shepherd, Colin, Clara, Callahan, Olivia, Reyleigh, Benjamin and Emily. Richard is also survived by his Brother Ralph Schmidt, Sister-in-Law Rosemary Schmidt, as well as many Nieces and Nephews.

Richard Honorably served in the United States Navy from 1950-1955, during the Korean Conflict as a Boatswain's Mate aboard the USS Coral Sea CV-43 and developed a strong sense of patriotism until his dying breath.

Richard "Smitty" was employed at National Foods for 16 years, Chatham Supermarket Warehouse for 21 years and Arctic Cold Storage for 9 years before his retirement in 1996. Richard was a Parishioner and Usher at St. Priscilla Church in Livonia where he was a devout Catholic. He was also very active in many Metro Detroit Veteran activities, and was named the 2005 City of Livonia Veteran of the Year. He also served as Chaplain and Past-Commander of Livonia VFW Post 3941 where he is a lifetime member. Richard was recognized and awarded for his yearly Poppy Sales Drive for Veterans at Kroger on Five Mile Rd near Merriman and Joe's Produce on 7 Mile Rd by both VFW Post 3941 and VFW District 4. Richard was a Lifetime Member of the F.O.E. Motor City Eagles #2265, where he was the Conductor.

Richard was born to John & Bernadette Schmidt in Detroit, Michigan. Richard was preceded in Death by his Parents, Sister's; Delores (Nick) DiBiase, Marjorie (Bud) Loranger, Mary (Jerry) Methven and Sister-in-Law Lise Schmidt. Brother's; Bernard Schmidt, Raymond Schmidt, Thomas Schmidt, and Infant Son, John Francis Schmidt.

A Facebook Live Scripture Service for Richard will be held Thursday, December 17, 2020 at 7:00 PM. Due to Covid restrictions and everyone's safety, a Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at a later date.
